Shepard Fairey Print Sale to Benefit Coalition for the Homeless on artnet Auctions
The limited-edition Shepard Fairey print sale, benefiting the homeless in New York through the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, is exclusively on artnet Auctions.

Paris, Berlin and New York, NY (PRWEB) November 11, 2011

artnet Auctions announces the sale of 100 limited edition prints by Shepard Fairey (American, b.1970) to benefit Coalition for the Homeless. These prints inaugurate the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation’s Artist as Activist print project, championing Rauschenbergʼs legacy of using art as a vehicle for change. Continuing this tradition, the Foundation has chosen the Coalition for the Homeless as the beneficiary, and together the Foundation and Coalition selected Shepard Fairey to be this year’s “Artist as Activist.” The ultimate purpose of Artist as Activist is to raise needed funds and awareness to help the more than 40,000 homeless men, women, and children living in New York City.

Fairey’s The Future Is Unwritten evolved from several points of inspiration. Fairey states:
“Visually, the piece takes cues from the idealized styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. These art movements just proceeded, and crossed into, the Great Depression, an era that saw a tremendous social aid effort under Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The text, ‘The Future Is Unwritten’ is a quote from Joe Strummer of the punk group The Clash, who was a dedicated advocate for the working class. The flower growing from the barbed wire is symbolic of the negative being overcome by the positive, a visual metaphor for hope in the unwritten future. The text LIBERTY, SHELTER, and EQUALITY refers to values, if not rights, that most people see as universally important.”

The Artist as Activist program honors Robert Rauschenbergʼs legacy of creating prints and posters to heighten awareness of crucial issues, and to raise funds to advance humanitarian, international, and environmental goals. The Foundationʼs program supports the creation of new prints through collaborations between artists and organizations specializing in health and human services, the environment, or global issues. Artists will create limited edition prints that will be sold to raise funds for the selected organization.

Rauschenberg exemplified the role of “Artist as Activist,” as he consistently dedicated his art-making toward issue awareness and philanthropic support. Rauschenberg earned the title "artist-citizen" in 1976, during his critically acclaimed retrospective at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, in praise of his artistic and social energy.

From the Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange (ROCI) tour—which was founded to create and tour artwork internationally in order to foster cross-border peace—to the creation of artworks especially for organizations in the fields of the environment and humanitarian efforts, Rauschenberg used his art to expand the dialogue about issues that required attention and investment. Among the subjects of Rauschenbergʼs prints were apartheid, nuclear disarmament, economic development, population control, and artistsʼ rights. The organizations and causes for which he created prints and donated funds included Mt. Everest Nature Preserve, Earth Day, AIDS awareness and treatment, Natural Resources Defense Council, Tibetan heritage preservation UN-related issues of population control and peacekeeping, and Earth Day ozone awareness among many others.

A limited edition of 100 signed Shepard Fairey prints will be made available for sale exclusively through artnet Auctions. Proceeds of the sale will go to support the Coalition for the Homeless.
