With this week's opening of the Whitney Biennial and the Armory Show — and it's closely-scoured satellite fairs — coming up in just a few days, talk in the art world has been centering on the rising talents who are likely to break out in the year to come. Here are seven artists worth watching.
Adriana Lara (b.1978)
A self-taught conceptual artist who often works with found objects. Her installation of a banana peel on the floor of the museum was one of the highlights of last year's "Younger than Jesus show" at the New Museum. Born in Mexico. Lives and works in Mexico. Shows with Air de Paris gallery, in Paris.
Angel Otero (b. 1981)
Makes thickly impastoed paintings and sculptures entirely from oil paint. He was one of the standouts at the NADA fair in Miami in December, where Chicago dealer Kavi Gupta sold out an entire booth's worth. Born in Puerto Rico. Lives and works in New York. Shows with Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago.
Josh Brand (b. 1980)
A conceptual photographer who often works without a camera, making his prints of abstract subjects entirely in the darkroom. Has been chosen for participation in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Born in Wisconsin. Lives and works in New York. Shows with Herald St Gallery, in London.
Tauba Auerbach (b. 1981)
A conceptual painter, photographer and sculptor got a lot of attention for her solo show at Deitch Projects last fall. Has been picked to participate in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Born in San Francisco. Lives and works in New York. Until recently, showed with Deitch Projects; New York gallery unclear since Deitch is ceasing commercial activity in June. Also shows with Standard, in Oslo, and Jack Hanley, in San Francisco.
David Adamo (b. 1979)
Works in performance and dance. Often his projects involve assigning himself tasks, in institutional spaces such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Has been chosen for the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Born in Rochester, New York. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Shows with IBID Projects, London.
Aurel Schmidt (b. 1982)
Makes intricate, naturalistic fairy-tale like pencil drawings. Is in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Born in British Columbia, Canada; lives and works in New York. Has shown with Deitch Projects in New York, and Peres Projects (LA and Berlin).
Cyprien Gaillard (b. 1980)
Makes moody video works often centering around ruined buildings or ones being demolished and explorations of cultural conflicts, housing projects, etc. Was a star of last year's "Younger Than Jesus" exhibition at the New Museum in New York. Born in Paris. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Shows with Sprueth Magers (London and Berlin).
