Hirst Drops From No. 1 to No. 48 on Annual Power 100 Art List

Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Damien Hirst, who topped a list of the 100 most influential people in the art world last year, dropped to number 48 in the ranking published by ArtReview.

Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director of exhibitions and programs at London’s Serpentine Gallery, ranked first in the so-called Power 100 list, the eighth put together by the monthly magazine, and published in its November issue.

Hirst has “changed direction very obviously: He’s downsized his studio and seems to be in a kind of experimental moment,” Mark Rappolt, Art Review’s editor, who chaired the jury, said in an interview.

Another reason for the drop: Hirst was “very clever about experimenting with the market, and that’s not where art is right now,” said Rappolt.



Every year, timed to coincide with London’s Frieze Art Fair, Art Review gathers an international panel of art-world professionals to pick the 100 most influential people in their field. French billionaire collector, Francois Pinault, topped the list in 2006 and 2007 (he is sixth this year), and international art dealer Larry Gagosian was No. 1 in 2005 (he is fifth this year).



The “financial influence” criterion counted less this year, given the global recession. More emphasis was placed on the other requirements: having global, not local, influence on art being produced now, and having been active in the last year.

This year was “by far and away the hardest” when it came to agreeing on a winner, Rappolt said. Obrist was chosen not for his work at the Serpentine, but as a curator, critic and chronicler active on more than one continent. Rappolt cited Obrist’s work for the Yokohama Triennale in Japan and for Il Tempo del Postino, a performance-art show in Basel, Switzerland.



The 20 panel members will remain anonymous this year, Rapholt said. The Top 100 is sponsored by Ruinart Champagne.
